Tobaki is just that kind of place. :) Learning the backstory made it even more interesting. It turns out this space is the creation of a ceramic artist who ran the Sansoul studio in Gangneung and someone who previously operated Camel Bread. One person crafts objects from earth, and the other has spent years making bread and soup. Perhaps that is why, when you enter Tobaki, you feel a sense of familiarity, as if it has lived here for a long time, rather than the feeling of a newly opened bakery cafe. The soup of the day and brewing coffee I ordered that day were a simple combination of tomato soup and a slice of bread; the mix of soft acidity and nuttiness was light and perfect for a morning meal. The old house and small yard I gazed at while eating were not overly groomed, making me feel as peaceful and warm as if I were visiting a rural home.☺️ It was a beautiful and delicious space created with bread and earth by true natives (tobaki) of Gangneung!

The vibe of the remodeled old space, the way things were displayed, and even the handcrafted design points everywhere made it such an attractive place that caught my eye. The dessert bread and brewing coffee were delicious too. I expected a familiar, sugary bread from the name vanilla bun, but the first bite was a little different. There’s vanilla custard in the center, and the bread has a scent of cardamom. The soft, sweet flavor of vanilla and the unique spice note of cardamom blended together subtly and well. The brewing coffee I ordered with it tasted closer to a dark roast to my palate. It leaned more toward roasted aromas and bitterness rather than bright acidity, but the coffee balanced out the sweetness in my mouth well. Combining the taste, the space, and the unique vibe of this place, it truly felt like a warm and lovely spot.
