I originally planned to have tonkatsu at Jizu (지즈), but when I arrived, the waiting list was already closed. I quickly changed plans and rushed over to Gyozis Curry Bar. As the name suggests, it's famous for curry, but it’s surprisingly quite well-known for its ramen too. Its Jiro-style ramen is especially popular, but I ordered the Gyokai Jiro-style ramen for a change today. When the ramen arrives, I start with a spoonful of the broth. True to the 'Gyokai' name, notes of seafood flavors come through subtly. It’s not the type where the seafood scent hits you too hard, but rather it adds an umami boost amidst the rich broth. Overall, the density of the broth is quite thick, but I liked that the saltiness wasn't too intense for my expectations. You get the signature weightiness of Jiro-style ramen without an overwhelming rush of salt, so I think even those new to Jiro-style ramen could enjoy it without much burden. The meat topping on top is substantial in thickness. Rather than a style that falls apart softly, it’s a bit chewy with a definite bite to it. Personally, I like it when meat has some texture, so I enjoyed it quite a bit. And finally, the noodles. The noodles here are pretty unique. They are much thicker than standard ramen noodles, and instead of a bouncy, elastic feel, they have a texture that snaps when you bite into them. There might be mixed feelings about this, but since I like the texture of these rustic noodles, I had fun eating them. Rich broth, thick meat, and even noodles with a strong personality. Overall, it’s a bowl of ramen with a clear identity of its own. If you're in Seomyeon and want a bowl that's a bit heavier and more unique than typical ramen, it's a place worth visiting at least once.
