I have this weird compulsion that if I'm in Sokcho, I have to eat squid sundae, and I happened to find it at the flea market. Felt lucky to have stumbled upon it and ordered without hesitation. The menu I ordered that day was squid sundae nurungji. They grill the squid sundae right on the spot as you order. Watching it turn golden on the iron griddle, the savory smell of oil wafts up, and that’s when the anticipation naturally builds up. In particular, the way they carefully grilled each piece was impressive. Taking a bite of the finished squid sundae, the crispy texture is quite good first of all. The surface is grilled golden like nurungji (scorched rice crust) so it's crispy, and the inside keeps the chewy yet crisp texture unique to squid. The harmony of these different textures seems to be the biggest charm of this dish. The seasoning is moderate too. It’s not overly salty or stimulating, and it’s a composition that well brings out the savory flavor of the squid and the filling. Especially the nuttiness felt from the parts fried golden in oil was quite attractive. A total of 8 pieces were served, and as I picked them up one by one, they were all gone before I knew it. Actually, since I found this place by chance at a flea market, I ordered it without big expectations, but it was much more satisfying than I thought. I solved my little compulsion to eat squid sundae in Sokcho and even discovered delicious food, so it was a pretty successful choice. If I run into them again next time, I think I'll order it without hesitation.
