The thing about gukbap in Suncheon is that it’s not just a signature dish at a famous restaurant, but a local food that was developed alongside the traditional market. It is said that because many people have passed through this market where the 5-day market is held for a long time, a hot bowl of gukbap that anyone could eat quickly and easily naturally took root. Suncheon City also introduces gukbap as its representative food, and the Utjang Gukbap Alley is described as a place where the local food culture has been carried on for a long time. While planning my Suncheon trip, I struggled to decide which gukbap place to visit and decided on either Geonbong or Geomok, but after a local woman in her 60s recommended Mijeong Gukbap, I ended up visiting a place that wasn't on my plan. It's barely known compared to Geonbong and Geomok, the two giants of Araetjang, but many locals were visiting. The broth was clear, spicy, and refreshing with bean sprouts, and it contained a lot of chili, garlic, and pepper. I could tell it was a delicious bowl of gukbap just by smelling it when it came out. I adjusted the seasoning to my taste with spicy sauce and salted shrimp. Just like other places here, it followed the Suncheon gukbap tradition of serving boiled pork (suyuk), blood sausage (sundae), and vegetables even when ordering just gukbap, making it feel like a hearty feast. If I had eaten this in Seoul, the quality would be on par with a formal set meal. Local gems are always right.

There's Utjang and Araetjang around the Suncheon Jungang Market area. Usually, Utjang has a clear, clean broth with bean sprouts, and they serve a separate plate of offal, head meat, suyuk, and sundae. Araetjang often features a milky, rich bone-based broth, and many places don't provide the meat and sundae separately. For reliable, well-known gukbap spots: ⭐️In Araetjang, Geomok Sundaegukbap and Geonbong Gukbap are famous, while Jeil Sikdang and Hyangchon Sikdang are well-known in Utjang.⭐️ But today, I went to Mijeong Gukbap in Araetjang. A 70-year local mother-in-law's pick! She says she has tried sundae-guk everywhere, but this place is the most delicious🧐 Even though it's in Araetjang, the broth and composition were closer to the Utjang style. It had a clear broth with bean sprouts, clean without any gamey smell, and it was spicy and peppery, so it was easy to eat from the very first spoonful. Plus, they generously serve a plate of offal, sundae, and meat with blanched cabbage. And what I personally liked was the sundae! Instead of the common Byeongcheon-style sundae you see these days, they use a clean chal-sundae (glutinous rice sausage), which I thought went even better with the soup. I like rich, heavy sundaeguk, but this style of eating sundae and meat in a clear, refreshing broth is quite charming too. If you're eating sundaegukbap in Suncheon, it would be fun to compare how the broth styles differ depending on the market.
