On this day, I ordered both the hagfish and the spicy grilled intestines. The greatest charm of this place is, of course, the charcoal grill. The unique scent of the charcoal that rises while it grills is absorbed perfectly into the hagfish and intestines, a smell that makes you crave a drink even before the food arrives. They serve the hagfish and spicy intestines with a generous amount of onions on top. Taking a bite of the spicy-marinated hagfish with the onions is a great combination. The chewy texture and rich seasoning of the hagfish are complemented by the crunchy and refreshing taste of the onions, which also helps balance the spice. The spicy intestines also have that charcoal scent soaked right in. The more you chew, the more the nutty flavor comes out, and pairing it with the spicy marinade and a glass of soju naturally leads to the next glass. Personally, in places like this, the atmosphere plays as big a role as the taste of the food. The feeling of picking up a piece of hagfish and sipping soju in front of the charcoal fire. It feels like the fatigue from the day just melts away. It is a place that suits winter even better. It just happened to be snowing outside that day, and enjoying hagfish and intestines with soju in front of the warm charcoal fire created such a lovely atmosphere. The food itself was delicious, but it’s a place that stayed in my memory all the more because of the weather and the mood of that day. Yeontan-bul Kkomjangeo is a spot I want to visit again whenever I crave some hagfish and soju on a cold winter night.
