Unless you are specifically looking for it, it is hard to stumble upon this place. It is located on the second floor of the Busan Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market building, and the exterior gives no hint that a Chinese restaurant would be inside. However, the story changes once you visit. During lunchtime, the place is bustling with regulars. The signature dish here is the Szechuan-style Jjajang (black bean noodles) served on a platter. I ordered the Szechuan-style Jjajang without hesitation. After ordering, they brought out pickled radish and a yogurt drink. The staff seemed quite busy, but it was a bit disappointing to see them rather carelessly drop the plates and yogurt on the table. And then came the Szechuan-style Jjajang. First off, it is not as spicy as typical Szechuan-style Jjajang. It is mild enough for someone who cannot handle spicy food well to enjoy. The ingredients are quite generous. There is a good mix of squid and mushrooms, and the onions are cooked thoroughly, becoming soft enough to melt in your mouth. The noodles are standard Chinese-style noodles that we are all familiar with. However, the umami of the sauce is truly excellent. Rather than emphasizing the heat, it focuses on the umami derived from seafood and vegetables. The sauce coats the noodles perfectly, and you feel the rich flavor deepen as you eat. Personally, this sauce was the most satisfying part of my meal. If I wasn't on a diet, I would have definitely ordered a bowl of rice to mix in with the leftover sauce. According to other patrons, the Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) is also great because it is prepared in the old-fashioned style. I am personally curious about the Shiitake Mushroom Tangsuyuk, so I would like to try it if I visit again. However, the service was disappointing. The service felt a bit indifferent when the food was served, but there was a somewhat baffling incident during the payment process at the end. The staff member took my credit card without removing their cooking gloves, and my returned card had sauce on it. I understand that lunch hours are busy, but I wish they would pay more attention to these things. Overall, while the food at Geochang Banjeom was decent, the overall dining experience left something to be desired. The umami of the Szechuan-style Jjajang was definitely impressive, and it is a dish I would think about again. However, tasty food and a satisfying overall dining experience are two different things. Personally, I value service and hygiene just as much as the food itself, so my meal that day was mediocre at best. I enjoyed the fun of finding a hidden Chinese restaurant, but I do wish it could have left me with a better memory.
