I’d been eating a lot of seafood during this trip, so I naturally started craving meat. After looking into several places, I decided to visit this one because of the positive reviews about their charcoal-grilled ribs. First of all, the interior is well-maintained and clean, and the table layout isn't crowded, making it a comfortable place for a meal. That day, I started by ordering pork belly and then added charcoal-grilled ribs later. First, the pork belly. It’s a cut where you can enjoy both the savory fat and the chewiness of the lean meat. Grilling it over charcoal added a subtle smoky aroma, which made it easy to enjoy the natural flavor of the meat. Especially with pork belly, the savory fat is attractive enough on its own without needing any seasoning. Starting with pork belly rather than jumping straight into the marinated ribs was a good choice. And then, the charcoal-grilled ribs I ordered next. Personally, this was the most satisfying dish of the day. They serve house-made marinated pork ribs, and the marinade isn't overly sweet or intense. It’s a balance of moderate sweetness and saltiness that doesn't overwhelm the flavor of the meat itself. Adding that to the charcoal smoke results in an excellent depth of flavor. The combination of sweet marinade, savory pork fat, and the subtle smoky aroma is quite impressive. In fact, with marinated ribs, it's easy for the meat's flavor to get lost if the marinade is too strong, but this place has a good overall balance. Especially as you chew, the umami of the marinade really comes through; I could see why they promote the charcoal-grilled ribs as their main menu item. The side dishes were also quite satisfying. I think the side dish selection is just as important as the main menu at a BBQ restaurant, and every single dish here tasted good. They were presented neatly, making it easy to pair them with the meat. It didn't feel like they were just adding unnecessary items; it seemed like they selected the necessary ones appropriately. Things like these add to the overall satisfaction of the meal. Overall, Donggeuri Charcoal Ribs isn't a particularly flashy BBQ spot, but I think it's a place where the basic quality of the food is high. While the pork belly was delicious enough, personally, the charcoal-grilled ribs are what I'll remember. With a great balance in the marinade and the distinct flavor that comes from charcoal grilling, it was a very satisfying meal. Above all, the fact that even the side dishes were tasty and the overall setup was neat made it a comfortable dining experience. If you're in Sokcho and craving meat instead of seafood, it's a place worth visiting. If I visit again, I’ll definitely order the charcoal-grilled ribs.
