The stir-fried squid on an iron plate with fried rice is famous, and it seems many people also order the spicy braised chicken. I ordered the stir-fried squid. The stir-fried squid comes out bubbling on a round iron plate based on the number of servings, and if you don't say anything, the staff will pour in the rice, shredded seaweed, and sesame oil right away. If you mix it yourself and let it sit for a moment, the rice grains remain firm and you get a fried rice with just the right amount of crispiness. When ordering, the staff asked for the spice level, so I chose medium, but there was almost no heat and the sweetness was also mild. It's quite mild for fried rice, but thanks to that, you can clearly taste the squid itself. If you were imagining a bold, punchy fried rice, you will be disappointed, but this gentle style isn't bad once in a while. You can help yourself to as much cool, icy bean sprout soup as you like from the self-serve bar, but this one is also very bland. If the fried rice had been heavily seasoned, I would have thought the light bean sprout soup was a good match, but since the fried rice is also mild, it feels really tasteless when eaten together. Since it's an iron plate fried rice, your clothes will smell and oil splatters like crazy when mixing, so an apron is a must. If you want a bold, stimulating fried rice, going to the nearby Dongseone Nakji (동서네낙지) is the right choice, but if this style is more to your taste, it's a place worth checking out while you're in Iksan.
