Andong's signature gelato
Achaga (아차가) is a gelato specialty shop in Andong where you can't get in on the weekend without waiting in line. I wondered if it was really worth lining up for just a gelato, but curiosity got the better of me—wondering if there was a reason for the queue—and I joined the line. I ordered a cup for 5,000 won. I chose Yangban Rice and Plum for the two flavors, and picked Pistachio for the sample scoop to compare it with Pietra in Seoul. Their signature Yangban Rice has the ideal taste and texture of rice gelato found elsewhere. The rice has a nice bite, it’s nutty, and it’s properly thick and chewy just like good gelato should be. Though, it leans slightly more toward vanilla or milk than rice. The plum was noticeably delicious; you can really tell they packed it with plum flesh and skin, and it has a refreshing, vibrant flavor. It tastes about 1.5 times more concentrated than anywhere else. I’d heard that their sorbet is particularly good, and that seems to be true, given that most of the sold-out items during my visit were sorbets. The sample scoop of pistachio was also impressively thick with a deep, nutty flavor. The texture and density felt just a hair lower than Pietra's, but it's surprising that the difference isn't as big as I thought. Pietra is fine, but it’s too expensive, and the texture is so thick that it can sometimes feel like it’s clogging your throat in the summer, so considering that, Achaga actually feels better. In my experience, Achaga offers quality similar to Pietra at a price point comparable to GLT Gelato. It combines the best of both, so it’s definitely worth the wait, and I’m not sure there’s anywhere else in the country that hits this level of taste and value. I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Andong. Just a heads up, some flavors can sell out by around 2 PM, so if you have your heart set on something, you should probably get here between 12 and 1 PM. Well... basically, just show up for the opening.
