A Jeju Cafe with Two Resident Dogs
“We absolutely have to go to a cafe with dogs.” “I don't care how the drinks taste.” At my companion's firm insistence, we found a cafe with two resident dogs. Coffee and dessert had never been the point that day. It was all about the dogs. The two friends who live at the cafe are named Ringo (링고) and Star (스타). At first, they were similar in size and looked so natural together that I assumed they were siblings. But the owner told me they'd come from completely different places and lived very different lives. Ringo was reportedly a stray puppy wandering around the Gujwa area of Jeju. After being found, Ringo met the family they live with here today. Star was a dog from Gimpo who was initially brought in for foster care, but eventually became part of the family and has been with them ever since. Their personalities are every bit as different as their stories. Ringo is fairly comfortable with being touched. Even when people come close and pet them, Ringo stays put without a fuss, giving visitors who came to meet the dogs exactly what they hoped for. Star, on the other hand, has clearer boundaries. Looking is allowed, but the moment you reach out, Star quietly moves away. I found the very clear attitude—meeting is fine, touching isn't—rather amusing. Even though they share the same space, it's hard to look away as you watch how differently they interact with people. Honestly, we'd already accomplished our goal just by meeting the two of them. I hadn't expected much from the drinks or desserts. But then I found a surprisingly satisfying matcha. Matcha wasn't originally on the menu, but when I brought it up, the owner kindly made a cup especially for me. I expected just a light taste, but to my surprise, the matcha was remarkably strong. It wasn't drowned out by milk or sweetness, and its distinct bitterness and nutty flavor came through clearly. I never expected a cafe I visited for the dogs to satisfy the matcha lover in me too. Meeting Ringo and Star, each with their own story and personality, would have made the cafe memorable enough. The owner's warm consideration and the better-than-expected matcha made it even more special. The visit began with the claim that the drinks didn't matter, but in the end, both the dogs and the matcha were great. Still, if you want to get closer to Star, it's better not to rush. Quietly watching from the distance Star allows is another way to enjoy this cafe.
