Thoughts on brewing machines
Felt Coffee Gwanghwamun (펠트커피 광화문점) is located on the B1 level of Gwanghwamun D Tower. The modern, minimalist interior and exterior are slightly reminiscent of an art gallery. It seems like a nice place to enjoy coffee while reflecting alone or waiting for someone. I ordered the iced Kiamugumo brewed coffee. The beans range widely in price from 7000~10000 won, so there are plenty of options to choose from. The tasting notes are blackcurrant, blueberry, and floral, and the fresh aroma and flavors bring each to mind to a reasonable degree. It isn't too watery, the acidity is moderate, and there's no unpleasant water smell.... It's simply a decent-quality cup of drip coffee with no particular rough edges. When you order, they let you know that the coffee is prepared with a brewing machine. Unlike hand-drip coffee, the flavor varies less, so there's no need to worry about luck of the draw with the barista. Still, the lack of feeling that comes from it not being brewed by hand is somehow.... something that bothers me. Sometimes, when an exceptionally skilled barista brews coffee by hand, it can be a special experience where the flavors seem to explode in your mind. I've yet to have that kind of experience at a place that uses a machine, so I have this prejudice that there's a limit to how great it can be. But perhaps, with time, places will emerge where a machine can deliver that rare experience too.
