Old school? More like outdated...
This is Gamae Japanese Cuisine (가매 일식), run by Chef Ahn You-seong (안유성), who has been in business for many years, earned the title of Century-Old Store and recognition as a culinary master, and became even more famous as a White Spoon contestant on Culinary Class Wars (though it feels like all the hype around the show has faded by now....). The restaurant seems committed to the old-school Korean Japanese restaurant style of over a decade ago (according to my parents, so they're probably right). Everything from the side dishes to the fried food had a distinctly Korean touch (though I definitely wouldn't call it Korean food). Apparently, serving the food and walking away without any explanation whatsoever is also part of that old style. What was really disappointing, though, was that this "style" didn't feel traditional—it just felt terribly outdated. In other words, the food was underwhelming. When the food is good, you see this as "preserving tradition"; when it isn't, it just feels outdated, and I think outdated is the right word here. Neither the salad nor the sushi was much better than what you'd get at a neighborhood budget sushi joint. The tendon was at least decent. Gamae left me thinking it either needs a stronger culinary philosophy or some improvement.
