Mori no chiisana resutoran~ 𝅘𝅥𝅮
This place perfectly matches the currently popular song “A Little Restaurant in the Woods.” It's not quite in the woods, of course, but getting here means winding along a two-lane road in Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin. Drive through the countryside and you'll find Maison Forêt (메종포레), a house hidden behind trees with a faint scent of firewood. It's a one-table restaurant run by a single chef. The house was originally acquired by the chef's grandparents as a vacation home and is now used as the restaurant. It operates on a relatively private basis, and reservations can be made by DM. The dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows, which naturally gives the space a quiet, peaceful feel. In summer, it's still fairly bright outside when the meal begins, but it gradually grows dark as the course progresses. On a snowy winter day, you can dine while taking in an even more romantic view. The food is served as a set course that follows a similar progression, with variations depending on the season and ingredient availability. Early in the meal, vegetables such as asparagus, beans, or tomatoes are served with cheese. Paired with the accompanying bread, the mild flavors make for a perfectly good first dish. One of the course's highlights is the potato. When potatoes are in season, octopus or potato purée appears on the plate almost without fail. One of my regular dining companions here gets so sad on days when there's no potato that you'd think they'd lost their country. The course reaches its peak toward the end with meat, pot-cooked rice, and ramen. The firewood crackling outside transforms into the cooking fire for the steak. The quality meat is followed by pot-cooked bulgogi rice, and the meal ends with a cup of Shin Ramyun topped with truffle. The food here is generally “just right.” The flavors aren't intensely assertive, and I don't think the seasoning is particularly strong either. The dishes themselves may look familiar, but there's a sense of restraint and elegance within them. Above all, the strengths here are free corkage and the atmosphere of the setting. Since you can bring and drink whatever alcohol you like, it's well suited to gatherings centered around drinks. The experience begins with the journey here in the first place. My regular dining companions split into small groups and ride together in each other's cars, so a visit feels like both going out for a meal and taking a short trip.
