A latte with well-balanced acidity
A great coffee spot I came across while walking along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. I stopped by on a local resident's recommendation. I went in knowing nothing about the place and ordered an iced latte as usual. Bookshelves reminiscent of a library line the walls, with coffee beans displayed on each one. They use beans roasted in-house, and you can tell they're serious about their coffee. It was the weekend, so every seat was taken. I got my drink to go and found a bench along the walking trail. The latte was good. Espresso beans for lattes are usually medium to dark roasted. The usual combination is full-bodied espresso and rich, nutty milk, but an overly dark roast throws off the balance. The latte at Pomelo Bean (포멜로빈) has a touch of acidity. It doesn't take away from what a latte should be, and the balance is excellent. When I got home, I checked Pomelo Bean's website and read that they aim to make contemporary Korean coffee. As specialty coffee has become popular, acidity has come to represent something distinctive. The site describes Pomelo Bean's identity as expressing that acidity in a balanced way while adding a Korean aesthetic. Even before reading the description, that identity came through clearly enough in the experience itself. Still, it was a little disappointing that the goal of making Korean coffee wasn't immediately apparent. Even looking back, I can't say I noticed any Korean elements.
